Lawler, born on March 20, 1982, in San Diego, California, began his MMA journey at the age of 16. Training under the tutelage of renowned coach Pat Miletich, Lawler quickly developed his skills and made his professional debut in 2001. Fighting in promotions such as King of the Cage and Icon Sport, Lawler showcased his devastating knockout power and aggressive fighting style, earning him the nickname "Ruthless."In 2002, Lawler entered the UFC and soon established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the welterweight division. His first run with the promotion saw him record impressive wins over veterans like Chris Lytle and Frank Trigg. However, his clash with Aaron Riley at UFC 37 truly put him on the map. Lawler delivered a brutal left hook that knocked Riley out cold and secured him a spot in the highlight reels.

Despite his early success, Lawler faced some setbacks in his career. He struggled to maintain a consistent winning streak, often alternating between victories and defeats. Nonetheless, his reputation as an exciting and hard-hitting fighter continued to grow. During this time, Lawler fought under various promotions, including Strikeforce, Icon Sport, and EliteXC, where he competed against top-level opponents and showcased his never-back-down mentality. In 2013, Lawler made a triumphant return to the UFC, signing a multi-fight contract. During this second stint with the promotion, he achieved his greatest success.

In the same year, Lawler defeated welterweight contender Josh Koscheck, earning him a shot at the vacant UFC Welterweight title against Johny Hendricks. Their five-round slugfest at UFC 171 showcased Lawler's immeasurable heart and earned him a split-decision victory, crowning him as the UFC Welterweight champion. As champion, Lawler faced a barrage of top contenders, defending his title in thrilling battles against the likes of Rory MacDonald, Carlos Condit, and Tyron Woodley. The fight against MacDonald at UFC 189 is perhaps one of Lawler's most memorable performances. Both fighters engaged in a brutal back-and-forth war that resulted in a fifth-round TKO victory for Lawler, earning him "Fight of the Year" honors and further cementing his status as a true warrior. Lawler's championship reign ended in 2016 when he faced Tyron Woodley at UFC 201. Woodley delivered a devastating first-round knockout that marked the end of Lawler's 170-pound dominance. Although he lost the title, Lawler continued to compete at the highest level, engaging in several memorable battles.
